Portola Valley Residence II

Located in Portola Valley, this residence is situated on a ridge, offering sweeping views of the coastal range to the west. The design carefully responds to the region's unique coastal climate and the native coastal live oaks that populate the landscape. The design uses a simple elegant material and planting palette to create a clear threshold moment that highlights the site's incredible views and accentuates the native oak assemblage. Visitors enter the property through a court anchored around the base of a large oak, then walk across stone pavers beneath two sculptural architectural awnings. The path leads to a central gathering space, framed by a grove of Palo Verde trees, a pool oriented to capture the panoramic view, and a majestic Heritage oak tree. Layered plantings of Calamagrostis and Artemisia guide the eye toward the expansive hillside beyond, adding depth to the landscape.
