Maui Residence
This project reflects the cultural and natural essence of Maui through its materials, planting design, and response to the landforms. Situated on a coastal property, the residence begins as a modest contemporary beach house, with ocean views gradually revealed. The entry courtyard features a striking puka lava rock wall, modern Hawaiian architecture, paired with a double-height concrete wall and teak deck. A linear water feature guides visitors to the front door, sheltered by a laser-cut metal roof.
The house descends to a lower level with expansive ocean views, leading to a lanai deck and infinity-edge pool that blends with the landscape. Native plants resilient to coastal conditions contrast with the tropical aesthetic, while a transplanted Willi Willi tree serves as a focal point, symbolizing cultural and ecological significance.
