UC Davis Teaching and Learning Center

The primary design framework for the new Teaching and Learning Complex is to create spaces that integrate effectively with the campus’ existing fabric while extending the learning environment outdoors. To achieve this, pedestrian and bicycle circulation, along with bike parking, are carefully woven through the site to optimize flow and functionality. Outdoor rooms are incorporated to provide diverse spaces for gathering, socializing, studying, and dining. The landscape design includes 800 bike parking spaces, universally accessible paving, and seating. Stormwater management is enhanced with bio-treatment areas that capture runoff and support habitat. The planting strategy incorporates drought-tolerant species to minimize irrigation and enhance biodiversity, while preserving mature trees and adding new ones to maintain a continuous canopy that supports heat exchange and evapotranspiration.
