UCB Lawrence Hall of Science Karplus Outdoor Nature Lab

This project transformed an underserviced side lot adjacent to the Lawrence Hall of Science into a dynamic educational space with stunning views of San Francisco Bay. The small, bowl-shaped site was initially overgrown with invasive shrubs and trees. Lutsko Associates cleared the invasives, thinned the trees to highlight key specimens, and enhanced the natural wet basin featuring willows. Key aspects of the project include a habitat trail showcasing diverse plantings and view decks, a multi-use space as communal classroom and gathering area, and a pavilion for exhibits and observation. The design features low-maintenance, pollinator-friendly plants that bloom year-round, supporting various habitats and wildlife. The pavilion, created with donor and volunteer support, includes a concrete floor stamped with animal prints, insect sculptures, and blinds for privacy. Budget-friendly materials like crushed stone pathways, wood retaining walls, a repurposed fallen redwood tree bench, and a reclaimed eucalyptus log play feature were thoughtfully incorporated.
